About Jonathan David Phillips
Jonathan David Phillips was born on December 8, 1981, and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 2000. He was one of five valedictorians in his high school class and was Homecoming King his senior year. Throughout his education, Jonathan received numerous academic awards and honors and was active in drama, choir, show choir, band, jazz band, madrigal, Math Olympics, the Quiz Bowl, Odyssey of the Mind, and more. He was attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) at the time of his death and would have graduated in 2004.
His first love was musical theatre. He joined the Sioux City Community Theatre Junior Theatre in the fall of 1992. He remained active at the community theatre until 1997 and also received training and had roles at Lamb Theatre. He was also active in the South Sioux City High School drama program and had roles in almost every school production from seventh grade on, culminating with the role of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music his senior year. In the summer of 1999, he was selected to attend and participated in a theatre program at New York University, New York. Additionally, he was a member of the Jumpstarts/Side Project "ska" band from 1996 to 2000 and sang and played saxophone.
He continued to pursue studies in theatre at UNL. He was an active member of the Acacia Fraternity, and in 2001 he wrote, directed, and starred in a melodrama that was produced as a fundraiser by UNL fraternities and sororities.
Jonathan passed away in a car accident on May 30, 2002. His life continues to inspire his family and friends today.
